Dam type

Chiotas Lake is obtained by the construction of two dams:

- Chiotas Dam, of the concrete arch-gravity type;

- Colle Laura Dam, of the concrete gravity type.

The second dam, of smaller sizes, has been built to close a lateral saddle; the spillway is located on the Colle Laura right bank.

Nameplate capacity of the powerplant

1,184 MW. Entracque power station, located downstream of the Chiotas reservoir, houses nine reversible units, eight of which utilizing the Chiotas head. Each of the eight units has a capacity of 148 MW in generating mode and of 155 MW in pumping mode.


Entracque Luigi Einaudi power plant is the largest hydroelectric station in Italy. Its named after Luigi Einaudi (1874-1961), Italian economist and statesman, who served as the first President of the Italian Republic, between 1948 and 1955.

In addition to the 8 units utilizing the Chiotas head (between Chiotas and Piastra reservoirs), Entracque power station houses one other reversible unit on the Rovina head, between Rovina (1,528.00 m a.s.l.) and Piastra (956.00 m a.s.l.) reservoirs. The design capacity of this unit is 133.67 MW in generating mode and 124.94 MW in pumping mode.
